It’s time to change your thinking about anxiety.
I want to start and say that I have a deep respect for people who go through anxiety all the time. It is a horrible way to live…and I know, cause I lived it on and off for most of my life. I am also very stubborn, so I have dedicated most of my time to learning about it and finding every way to get rid of it.
One of the questions I ask is can anxiety ever really go away?
I was running a workshop and one woman said to me that anxiety will never go away, you have to deal with it. Then she rolled her eyes.
I call that bullshit.
- I have seen people go from debilitating anxiety and panic who are now living their best life.
- Kids who were bundles of anxiety are now thriving.
- Even more so, I work with people who get anxiety 3 or 4 times a week and that is now cut in half.
The one thing that does happen is the anxiety becomes less a problem, less annoying, less often, and less able to derail you.
So EVEN if you don’t believe it can ever go away, please know that it can be decreased to the point where your life can and will change…for the better.
Can anxiety ever go away?
There are two types of anxiety. (this is not a medical term) helpful and not so helpful. If you have general or situational anxiety, that is not so helpful. That type of anxiety can go away. Helpful anxiety is the kind that keeps you safe and wakes you up.
It is your sympathetic nervous system that reacts to danger. At that point, it floods your body with chemicals. The same chemicals that you would feel if a bear jumped out at you.
Your body is being flooded by adrenaline which makes you want to do something, like run or fight.
Blood is being moved to important areas like legs and arms and moved from other areas like your digestion. Your senses increase, your heart rate goes up…etc…
All of these are ways to help the body react.
So, you need that type of anxiety.
As for unhelpful, situational, or general anxiety, your mind has got its wires crossed and believes that whatever the threat is is dangerous enough to warrant a flood of chemicals.
You have created a memory a ‘trigger’ around that anxiety so when the situation presents itself your body reacts.
I like to think of this as faulty wiring or the best way to explain it. You created a really bad habit. Your brain has habituated your anxiety.
So, how can we make this anxiety go away without the traditional treatments of therapy and medication?
Well, since I’m a hypnotist, I don’t ‘treat’ your anxiety. I work on the bad habit you created.
And I do so by focusing on neuroscience.
I work with the direct memory to change the trigger and the charge of the memory. This is called memory reconsolidation and it’s on the cutting edge of science when it comes to reducing and eliminating that unhelpful anxiety.
Imagine this scenario
You got an uncomfortable text message from someone. And now, every time you think of it, your anxiety rises. six months later, you think of that situation, and your anxiety rises.
Imagine again, that you just did some memory consolidation and now when you think of that text message, nothing happens. You might even giggle.
Yes, this is possible. This is what I do.
So the answer is still yes and no.
Yes to the shit that shouldn’t be there and No to the amazing ability of your body and mind to keep you safe.
I want to end this podcast with one thing.
You do not have to suffer from anxiety like you do. There is so much work going on in the neuroscience realm and I can tell you that it hasn’t caught up with the current treatment for anxiety.
Remember, you have a powerful mind and it can be changed to support the life you want to live. In the meantime, enjoy your day, one minute at a time.
